About us
We are Lego collectors and Lego respecters
Brickshop is owned and run by Aucklanders who love Lego. We have been collecting Lego sets for many years – some to build with, others to put aside as an investment.
In 2007 we started importing Lego sets directly. We sold to friends and through Trademe. Now we have graduated to our own online Lego shop – Brickshop NZ.
Our aim with Brickshop is to make current Lego sets available online to New Zealanders. Often our prices are lower than major toy stores. We also search the world for rare and unusual Lego sets. All the sets we sell are brand new and 100% genuine Lego.
Some crazy facts about Lego:
- The word ‘Lego’ comes from the Danish words Leg Godt, which means ‘play well’.
- Lego bricks are made from acrylonitrile butadiene-styrene (ABS) plastic, which is malleable enough to conform to moulds. It is heated to 230+ degrees Celsius, then allowed to cool for a few seconds before being released from the moulds.
- Genuine Lego has a tiny three-digit number stamped on the interior wall of the brick. This number indicates the mould used and allows Lego to trace every brick to a specific batch.
- A Lego brick made in 1958 would still interlock with a Lego brick made today.
- In 2009, James May (Top Gear guy) built a full-size house from Lego bricks.
- Mr Gold is the most valuable solo mini-figure to make the ‘most expensive Lego sets in the world’ list. He’s currently valued at around US$1,500.
- The tallest Lego set in the world is the Eiffel Tower set, released in 2007.
- The largest Lego set ever, with nearly 6000 pieces, is the Taj Mahal set. Released in 2008, today it’s worth nearly US$3000.
